Who doesn’t want an easy go-to breakfast? Apple cinnamon overnight oats are delicious any time of year but especially in the fall when apples are freshly ripe. Slice and dice some apples and add some sweet and cinnamon and you have a really easy breakfast your whole family will enjoy.
Why overnight oats?
There are a few reasons to make overnight oats:
- it’s super nice to have breakfast ready in the morning to start your day-one less thing you have to do
- it’s very beneficial to soak grains to make it easier on digestion
- if you’re not going to boil your oats, soaking them is the way to go to be able to chew them haha
- you can make these in literally any flavor
What will I need?
- oats
- milk (any kind)
- water
- sucanat (or a sweetener of your choice)
- cinnamon
- apples
- bowl
- spoon
In our family, we eat oats every. single. day. Our kids LOVE them. They can be in cookie form, bar form, hot oatmeal, overnight oats, oat pancakes… you get the idea. So, this is but one kind that we enjoy and gets bowls scraped clean every time. It’s hard to beat the combination of apples and cinnamon, especially in the fall.
There are two ways to eat overnight oats. You can put them into jars (as pictured below) separately so everyone has a grab-and-go sort of meal and eat them cold right out of the fridge. OR, you can make a huge bowl and scoop out the pre-made oats and either still eat them cold or heat it up on the stovetop or in the microwave. We’ve enjoyed them both ways.
How do I make apple cinnamon overnight oats?
Well, quite simply, you make them the night before you eat them so the oats can soak overnight. If you’re going to make a big batch I do think it’s easier to use a big bowl instead of individual jars.
Gather your ingredients. Add all the dry components (oats, cinnamon, sucanat) to the bowl and mix.
Now, add milk and water and mix again. Peel, core, slice, and dice your apples to the size of your preference. Add them to the bowl and combine. At this point I just put cling-wrap over the bowl and stick it in the fridge so it’s ready to distribute to all the hungry kids in heaping ladle fulls. If you want, now would be the time to put it in individual jars.
*note: sometimes it takes a little more stirring for the sucanat to dissolve like regular sugar.
Another thing that makes this delicious but a little more dessert-like is adding maple sweetened whipped cream! I use my ninja blender to make quick whipped cream but any method for whipping will do!
If you love a hot drink in the morning consider trying these with your oatmeal:
I hope you enjoy!
